General regret was expressed here on Tuesday when it became known that Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Beveridge Huxtable had died in Sydney on Monday. At the commencement of the war Lieutenant-Colonel Huxtable, who was in command of the 2nd Infantry (Kennedy) regiment, went at once to Thursday Island as commanding officer. Later on he went to Enoggera, and was appointed lieutenant-colonel in the Army Medical Corps, and left Australia in command of the 7th Field Ambulance ; Lieutenant-Colonel Ross, of Townsville, being second in command. Lieutenant-Colonel Huxtable was at Gallipolli, where he did splendid work. After a strenuous time in the Peninsula he was invalided to Egypt, and on the evacuation he went to France. At the armistice Lieutenant-Colonel Huxtable was in charge of one of the great base hospitals in France ; he was promoted and decorated with the D.S.O., and later made a C.M.G., and on several occasions mentioned in dispatches for conspicuous bravery in the field. Lieutenant-Colonel Huxtable was born in Tasmania, educated in New Zealand and Edinburgh. On coming to Australia he practised in Thursday Island and Croydon. Later he was appointed as assistant to Dr. F. E. Hare in the
Charters Towers Hospital. On Dr. Hare relinquishing his position, Dr. Huxtable became resident medical officer, a position he occupied for many years, leaving it to enter into private practice in Charters Towers. In the North and North-west of Queensland there are many hearts that will sadden on reading of the death of this gifted surgeon and gallant soldier. Deep sympathy is expressed here for Mrs. Huxtable and her two children, who are at present living at Sydney
