Walter was the third of four children of Frederick (Fred) Marshall (1858 in Yorkshire, England) and Mary Charlotte MacKenzie (b1860 in Lancashire, England). Fred was a Cart Driver when he immigrated in 1883, arriving in Brisbane QLD on board the Kincairdanshire. Mary (aka Charlotte) arrived in Townsville, QLD in 1883 on board the Eastern Monarch. Fred and Charlotte lived in Boulia and Winton, QLD where they raised their family. Following Fred's death in 1898, Charlotte remarried John Guard in 1905 in Gympie, QLD.
Walter was a Clerk in Winton, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in July 1916. He served as a Private (Service No:3008) with 47th, 52nd and 49th Infantry Battalions in France, where he was WiA in 1918 (Gas Poisoning. Walter was Discharged in April 1919.
Returning to Winton, Walter was working as a Grocer's Assistant in 1923 when he married Jessie Richards (b1892 in Ipswich, QLD. Walter and Jessie settled in Winton where Walter was a Grazier. In the 1950's they moved to Brisbane, QLD where Walter died in 1964 and Jessie in 1969.
