Awarded the Military Medal
4th Battalion 1850 Sargent John JOELl
For conspiouous bravery and devotion to duty at BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES or 4th 1917. This N.C.O was sent with an advance part to reconnoitre and guide the Company into position in the forward area. The party was broken up by heavey enemy barrage and the greater part became casualties. Sgt. JOEL pressed forward reconnoitred and alone guided 4 platoons to their positions. His courage and skill as a guide saved his Comany heavy casualities. During the advance of his platoon to the 2nd objective he did excellent work in reorganising at great personal danger. His cheerfullness and bravery were beyond praise.
