Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Edward Berry’s father and two brothers, all of whom gave their occupation as plasterers, had enlisted by 1915. His younger brother, 137 Pte. Frederick Berry 2nd Battalion AIF, died of wounds suffered at Gallipoli on 15 November 1915. His brother James Berry was three times wounded and awarded a Military Medal for bravery in 1918. His father, also James Berry, enlisted at the age of 43, in December 1915. He served with the 1st Tunnelling Company AIF, but was sent home to Australia in May 1917, medically unfit due to debility and age.

Edward enlisted only five days before his unit sailed from Australia. He served with his regiment in Egypt and the Middle East for the entire war, and managed to take a photograph of his brother Frederick’s grave in Alexandria, Egypt. Edward returned to Australia in July 1919.

Edward’s son, NX2727 Private Arthur John Berry 2/30th Australian Infantry Battalion died of illness as a prisoner of war in Thailand on 24 July 1943. He was 21 years of age.
