Son of David Edward Underwood and Elizabeth Emma Underwood nee Jones of Northgate Street, Unley, SA.

Brother of Walter Clifton Underwood who returned to Australia on 26 June 1919 having served with the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron and Frank Maldon Underwood who returned to Australia on 8 Janaury 1918 having served with the 5th Pioneer Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 6 June 1919 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 18 October 1919

On 24 August 1920 Douglas married Ethel McFowan in the Adelaide Registry Office, SA.
