3433 Corporal George William Neal MM, 1st Light Trench Mortar Battery from Summer Hill, NSW. A 24 year old carter prior to enlisting on 12 July 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private (Pte) with the 11th Reinforcements of the 1st Infantry Battalion from Sydney aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5 October 1915. After arriving in Egypt, he joined the 1st Battalion and went with them to France in March 1916 and then on 4 August 1916 he transferred to the 1st Light Trench Mortar Battery. He was wounded in action on 5 May 1917 and spent six months away from his unit undergoing medical treatment and recuperation. Pte Neal was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for bravery under enemy machine gun and shell fire when he assisted in bringing a gun into action to silence two enemy machine guns which were holding up the attack. When wounded, he refused to be evacuated and remained at Headquarter to assist. He was promoted to corporal on 21 June 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 23 April 1919.
