Son of George Henry Vitnell of Eugowra Public School, Orange, NSW and Sarah Elizabeth Vitnell of Melrose Calvert Street, Marrickville, NSW.

Brother of Ernest Edward  Vitnell who returned to Australia on 4 March 1919 having served with the 17 th Battalion and Horace Gordon Vitnell whoi returned to Australia on 18 September 1917 having served with the 10th Field Artillery Brigade

Commenced return to Australia on 20 July 1917 aboard HT Morvada disembarking on 28 August 1917
