Died on this date – 24th January…… Herbert Roy Bakes was born on 30th April, 1897 at Quamby Brook, Deloraine, Tasmania.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 22nd May, 1918 as a 21 year old, single, Farm Labourer from Quamby Brook, Tasmania.
Private Herbert Roy Bakes, Service number 63246, embarked from Melbourne on SS Zealandic on 5th October, 1918 with the 3rd Tasmanian Reinforcements. He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 15th November & discharged on 30th November, 1918. Private Bakes disembarked at London, England on 5th December, 1918.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
On 5th December, 1918 Private Bakes was marched in & allotted to 12th Battalion Reinforcements at 1st Training Battalion, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire. He was marched in from Group Clearing Station on 9th January, 1919.
He was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 22nd January, 1919 with Bronchitis. He was reported dangerously ill with Pneumonia.
Private Herbert Roy Bakes died at 5.45 p.m. on 24th January, 1919 at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Sutton Veny of Broncho Pneumonia.
He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves & 2 WW1 Australian Nurses are laid to rest.
