Son of John Ambrose Oakes and Jessie Oakes of New Canterbury Road, Hurlstone Park, NSW formerly of Moss Vale, NSW. 

Brother of Garnet Oakes who returned to Australia on 3 March 1919 having served with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade

Commenced return to Australia on 25 January 1919 aboard HT Ceramic disembarking on 14 March 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel by boat to Sydney
