He was one of eight children, all born at South Darley to Alfred George and Fanny Dorothy Bamford. His first job was as a domestic gardener. At some time after 1911 he emigrated to Mackay, Australia.
He is remembered at Finningley - Holy Trinity & St Oswald Church on the War Memorial and is also commemorated on Old Mackay Town Hall foyer, Sydney Street, Mackay. Australia .
