'Roll of Honour.
WEBB.- In loving memory of our dear brother, L.- Sergeant W. H. Webb, B Company, 30th Battalion, killed in action Bullecourt, France, September 29, 1918; aged 22½ years.
Death cannot from our minds efface.
His happy smile, his dear face;
His words, his actions are not dead,
But in our hearts are daily read.
Time cannot alter love so deep and true,
This day brings back to us our grlef
anew.

A tragic story of a Forgotten Digger of The Boer War, The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery.
100 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 15th January 1920, Private William Henry Webb (M.M.), 55th Battalion, carpenter from Wagga Wagga, New South Wales and Goulburn, N.S.W., father of one, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 40. GENERAL-16. 29.

Born at Paarl, Western Cape, Johannesburg, South Africa on the 4th August 1879 to John Henry and Elizabeth Webb of Tobacco Street, Fordsburg, Johannesburg, South Africa; husband of Jane Webb nee Carson (married 1903, New Zealand, died 1954 Timaru, New Zealand), William enlisted August 1914 with the 6th Battalion at Melbourne, Victoria.
Transferred to the 5th Battalion, William was invalided home July 1915 with chronic rheumatism and tuberculosis.
Reenlisting November 1915 with the 55th Battalion, Mr Webb was again invalided home February 1918 with rheumatism and senility.
William died on the 13th January 1920 from injuries (fractured skull) received by Albert Finnie at the Royal Hotel, Hunter Street West.

I placed a cross at Mr Webb’s unmarked grave April 2015, and submitted an application for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip May 2019, unfortunately this was declined July 2019.

William will be honoured with a Plaque from the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.
