Murray left Melbourne on A 32 Themistocles on 4 August 1917 and disembarked at Glascow on 2 October. His father’s consent for Murray to serve overseas with the 1st A.I.F. was granted on the proviso that he was not to serve abroad until his 19th birthday, but he later withdrew this stipulation. He went to France with the 50th Battalion on 24 June 1918. At the end of the war Murray married Mabel Jennings in New Mills, England on 29 December 1919 and returned to Australia on the Bahia Costillo disembarking on 16 June 1920 and was discharged on 2 August.
