George William Duncan Bampton’s address before going to war from the 14th of July was Divett Street, Alberton, South Australia. He wasn’t married when he first went to war, and was just the age of 19 when he enlisted. He was educated at Alberton State School, Adelaide, he was also a member of the Baptist community. Timeline of George William Duncan Bampton
- He proceeded to join Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 4 November 1915; taken on strength. After evacuating Gallipoli and proceeding to Mudros, he disembarked Alexandria on the 31 December 1915. Bampton was found guilty, in Ismailia, on the 9th January 1916, of being absent without leave from 6 pm, 1 January, to 3 January 1916 and for this he was awarded 14 days Field Punishment. He was then transferred to 48th Bn and taken on strength, Tel-el-Kebir, 3 March 1916. Bampton was then transferred to 50th Bn, to Serapeum, on the 26th March 1916; and was admitted to 13th Field Ambulance, 27 March 1916 (pyrexia of unknown origin) and was transferred to No 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, 27 March 1916; discharged to unit, 29 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join British Expeditionary Force, 5 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 12 June 1916.
- He was wounded in action, 13 August 1916 and was admitted to 3rd Casualty Claring Station, 13 August 1916 (gun shot wound, head); transferred to 2nd Australian General Hospital, 14 August 1916 (shrapnel wound, scalp); to England, 20 August 1916 then he was admitted to Kitchener Hospital, Brighton, England, 21 August 1916; transferred to Monte Video Camp, Weymouth, 2 October 1916. He was transferred to 70th Bn, 23 March 1917. He was found guilty, Wareham, 12 April 1917, of one being absent without leave from 9 am, 8 April, to 11 pm, 8 April 1917; he was found being absent without leave from 9 am, 9 April, to 9am, 10 April 1917: He was awarded 4 days Field Punishment No 2;
- He forfeited a total of 6 days pay. His regimental number changed to 2738A due to duplicate, 25 May 1917.
- Bampton was found guilty, 13 June 1917, of neglect of duty in that he left his tent in an untidy condition on 12 June 1917: awarded 2 days Confined to Camp. He was transferred to 50th Bn, Deverill, 10 November 1917; proceeded overseas to France, 10 November 1917 and marched into 4th Australian Division Base Depot, Havre, 11 November 1917 and marched out to unit, 14 November 1917; re-joined unit, 26 November 1917. Wounded in action, 14 September 1918 and was admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance, 14 September 1918 (shrapnel wound, leg) and was then transferred to 6th Casualty Clearing Station, 14 September 1918; died of wounds, 15 September 1918.
