Due to his name being incorrectly written as Colin Frederick Andrews on his papers when he resigned on 25 January 1916 the foreshore memorial at Port Broughton bears the inscription “ANDREWS C F”
Frederick Colin Andrews was the son of Frederick William and Rebecca Andrews of Port Broughton. Frederick was born at Mundoora on 22 June 1895. A student, he was 19 years old when he enlisted at on 26 March 1915.
He was allocated to 2nd Reinforcements 11 Light Horse Regiment and sailed from Adelaide aboard HMAT A61 “Kanowna” on 23 June. 11th Battalion landed on Gallipoli on 23 July 1915 but as he was inflicted with venereal disease Frederick was admitted to hospital on 27 July. Deemed “medically unfit” he was returned to Australia aboard HT “Port Lincoln”. At Broadmeadows Camp he returned to duty on 23 September and was transferred and allocated to 2nd Reinforcements 29 Battalion. On 25 January Frederick signed a new attestation Paper with his name incorrectly inscribed.
Frederick returned to Egypt with 2nd Reinforcements 29 Battalion aboard aboard HMAT A64 “Demosthenes” on 2 February 1916. Over the next 12 months he served with several units including 15 Battalion, 48 Battalion, 24 Howitzer Brigade, 4th Division Ammunition Column, 24th Artillery Brigade and 10th Field Artillery Brigade until on 6 April 1917 he was posted to 41st Battery 11th Field Artillery Brigade. He would remain with this unit until the end of the war. Frederick was wounded in action on 24 April 1918 but remained on duty.
Frederick embarked from England aboard SS “Armagh” on 5 April 1919 and disembarked in Australia on 16 May. He was discharged in Adelaide on 17 July 1919.
