Harold Joseph Reid was born in Ballarat and was a 22-year-old single Labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on 8 July 1915. He had no previous military experience and commenced his service on 14 July. Except from a week’s detachment with the 8th Brigade Group Reinforcement Camp Harold served with 18 Coy AASC for the duration of his active service. Driver Reid embarked for RTA on the Hospital Ship Devanha on 8 May 1919 returning to Melbourne on 23 June where he was discharged from the AIF on 15 August 1919 on his TPE. In 1915 the Troopship Devanha had landed troops at Gallipoli before being converted into a hospital ship.
