Norman Clement Ashton was only 20 years old when he first enlisted in September of 1914. He traveled to Egypt with the first Australian expeditionary force but developed enteric fever and was returned home in September 1915. He enlisted again in March 1916 and was sent overseas with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion in June 1916. In March 1917 he was discharged from the AIF and joined the Royal Flying Corps. He relinquished his commission on the 31 December 1918 due to ill health. He died on June 21 1927, at the Randwick Military Hospital.
