The death of Lieutenant Wilfred N. Beaver from wounds received in action has closed a promising career. Lieutenant Beaver, who was born in Melbourne, was educated at the Scotch College, and after commencing a law course at the University he joined the Commonwealth service, and was appointed a magistrate in Papua. He spent about twelve years in that service, and during that time became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Articles written by him on Papuan life and customs were published in the "Argus." Two years ago he enlisted, and joined the 60th Battalion. Lieut. Beaver has established a record for himself in being the first British soldier to enter German territory. With his troops, he entered German New Guinea—the first German colony captured by the British. Lieutenant Beaver is the grandson of Mr. Israel Bloomington, one of the founders of the St. Kilda Synagogue. His mother resides in London.
