History- Walter Victor Campbell

Walter Victor Campbell, the son of Ms Lucy Campbell, born Millicent, South Australia (approx. 1889) as a Presbyterian at the age of 7. He and his family moved to Adelaide South Australia and lived at 5 Edward St, South Australia. He studied at Prince Alfred College and later finished his studies at the University of South Australia. At his university he graduated with the Bachelor of Medicine. He started his first occupation at a small public hospital as a dental surgeon.  At the age of 21, he had smallpox and took him a while to recover from it.

On September 1st, 1916, he enlisted. The following year on the 28th of May 1917 he got examined for the war. As he wrote his will he had to choose his next of kin and he chose his mother. His embarkation number was 26/105/1. He was off to war. The ship he embarked on was HMAT Borda A30 and his first destination was Europe.

He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia. They ask if he was rejected from any service and he said no. When he started the war he got in the record of involvement in dental on the 23rd of June, that is when he continued with his occupation of being a dental surgeon. He continued with this occupation until a few weeks later the official got embarked as the major dental surgeon on site. He continued to help with a dedication to all the people needing help.

After staying in Europe until war's end, he relocated to England and was promoted Captain. He was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and his family was awarded a Memorial Plaque, known widely as the 'Dead Man's Penny'.

In London at War's end for a few months and then suddenly was diagnosed with Influenza during the pandemic. He had to stay and take rest for a long period of time, but on the 7th of November 1919 died at the age of 34 at Queen Alexander Military Hospital, Millbank, London. He was buried at the Australian Military burial ground, shortly after.

Walter Victor Campbell helped as an ANZAC with all his dedication, he fought and he with the passion he had his family was left behind and he still fought, and it really shook me how he had the courage. We will always remember his dedication.
