Dvr Raphael Thomas Flaherty

16465 Driver Raphael Thomas Flaherty had been employed as a fireman with the South Australian Railways when he enlisted for War Service at Adelaide on the 15th of September 1915. Allocated to reinforcements to the 13th Field Artillery Brigade, 1st AIF Raphael embarked for England and further training on the 4th of July 1916.

On the 8th of March he was sent to France and entered the ‘Bull Ring’ at Etaples before joining his Unit in the field on the 27th of March. Raphael’s service in Northern France and Flanders would be continuous and aside being granted leave he remained with his Unit until the end of the War. Temporally taken on strength with the AIF Printing Section on the 28th of January 1919,

Raphael re-joined his Unit by the 8th of April and embarked for England on the 1st of May so as to be repatriated to Australia, departing for his return on the 23rd of June 1919. Raphael received his discharge from the 1st AIF on the 2nd of October 1919 and he returned to civilian life.

Raphael’s premature death occurred on the 18th of February 1924 at the age of 29, and following his untimely passing he was formally laid to rest within West Terrace Cemetery, South Australia.
