Graham Frederick Hayes was born at Folkeston, Sussex England, the son of Edward Thomas and Sarah Mullet Hayes (nee Nunn). He migrated to Australia from Engalnd with his parents and three siblings in 1897. Another five siblings were born in Australia.
Private Hayes enlsited at Perth in September 1915 and went into Blackboy, Claremont and Belmont camps for training. He sailed for Egypt on 15 January 1916 with the 8th reinforcements of the 28th Battalion, per SS Borda and arrived in February 1916.
He went to Heliopolis first and then to Tel-el-Kabir. Here he transferred to the 51st Battalion on the first line of defence, Suez Canal.
He left for France on 6 June 1916 and went into action at Pozieres, Fleurbaix and Pozieres (2nd). It was on this second occassion at Pozieres that he was killed in action on 14 August 1916.
Prior to enlistment he was a shop assistant at Foy & Gibson, Perth. His older brother, 5028 Private Edward Sydney Hayes also served in the AIF with the 16 Battalion - he died of illness in England on 5 November 1916.
