James was the fifth of ten children of William Barrowman (born 1840 in Lanarkshire, Scotland) and Jane Cockburn (born 1846 in Ayrshire, Scotland). William and Jane met and married in Gympie, QLD and raised their children there.
James was living in Gympie QLD and working as a Draper when he enlisted in Toowoomba, QLD in 1915. He served with the AIF 5th Light Horse Brigade as a Private and then Corporal (Service nO: 1378) in Cairo, Port Said, Heliopolis and Moscar and was Discharged in 1919.
Following WWI, James lived in Rockhampton, QLD and worked as a Draper's Assistant. He married Annie Wilson in 1921 and they continued to live in Rockhampton and raise their family there. James worked as a Draper's Assistant and died in 1969 in Rockhampton
