Biography contributed by tony griffin

Joseph Briggs was the son of William and Priscilla Ruth Briggs of Port Broughton.  He was born at Port Broughton in 1897. A labourer, he was 21 years old when he enlisted on 5 January 1915.

Joseph was appointed to 7th Reinforcements 3rd Light Horse Regiment and embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT A51 “Kanowna” on 24 June 1915. On 13 November 1915 Joseph and 41 other reinforcements landed at Gallipoli and were taken on strength of 3 Light Horse Regiment that was based on Destroyer Hill. One month later, at midnight on 13 December 1915, 3 Light Horse began it’s embarkation from Gallipoli. 5 days later Joseph was admitted to hospital at Mudros with a sprained back. 3 weeks later he disembarked in Alexandria and rejoined his unit on 26 January 1916.

On 10 March 1916 3rd Light Horse moved by train from Khatatba to Girga to establish a new camp. While unloading horses Joseph had the first of several experiences with military discipline and on the same night he disobeyed orders not to leave the camp.

J. T. Bigg his troop leader that there was to be absolutely no leave, so no man was to go outside the camp boundaries. Breaking out of camp in that he committed the acts alleged in the particulars of the charge. No finding was recorded on the alternative charge. Awarded 28 days Field Punishment No. 2

Field General Court Martial.

(1) using insubordinate language to his superior officer, in that he at El. Qasa on 1.4.16 when ordered by 523 Sgt. McDonald to fill a nose bag, said “if you are a bloody man you will fill the bag yourself. You are like a big kid and acting like a fucking big kid” or words to that effect.

(2) Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he at El. Qasa on 1.4.16 when ordered by 523 Sgt. McDonald to feed Pte Merritt’s horse place an empty nose bag on the said horse.

Pleaded not guilty to both. Found guilty on both charges. Sentence 6 months Imprisonment with hard labour.

While serving his term of imprisonment Joseph was admitted to Citadel Military Hospital in Cairo after sticking a needle in his hand. 11 days later he was discharged back to the Detention Barracks to complete his term. However, his sentence of imprisonment was suspended from the 13 August and he returned to the unit. This may have occurred due to the number killed and wounded in the battle of Romani and the clean up that followed. On 4 December Joseph was taken on strength of 7th Sanitary Section responsible for maintaining as far as possible clean water supplies, cooking facilities and billets, de-lousing stations and similar facilities. Joseph transferred back to 3rd Light Horse Regiment on 21 March 1917.

In October 1917 the regiment was resting and training at Rafa Beach where Joseph was again in trouble.

Losing by neglect his clothing and equipment in that he at Kantara on 16/10/17 lost his great coat and gas helmet & neglected to report the loss of same to Cpl. Johnson who was the NCO in charge of party. Award: To pay for articles lost £1/1/-.

Joseph embarked for Australia aboard HT “Orari” on 16 May 1919 and disembarked in Adelaide on 26 June 1919. He was discharged on 19 August 1919.
