"Private Joseph Chant, whose, death in action was recently recorded was the son of Mr. Charles Chant, who resided at St. Mary's for many years, removing to Epping some years ago. The deceased soldier who was, we understand, in his 20th year, enlisted from Epping some two years ago. He took part in much fighting leading up to the advance beyond Ypres, and proved his soldierly qualities in the fiery ordeal of war. We have only meagre details of Private Chant's death, but are sufficiently informed to know that he fell valiantly in the great cause he held dear, and in so falling has gained the hero's guerdon in the estimation of his compatriots, and we trust in the world beyond the grave." - from the Nepean Times 27 Oct 1917 (nla.gov.au)
