Bertie Stanley ASPERY was born in Grafton, New South Wales in 1897
His parents were Thomas James ASPERY & Ann Elizabeth LAYTON who married in Grafton in 1888
He had previous service of 4 years in the Senior Cadets and 1 year in the Citizens Forces before he enlisted in Brisbane on 27th August, 1916 & embarked with the 15th Infantry Battalion, 12th reinforcements from Sydney on the HMAT Suffolk on 30th November, 1915
He was transferred to the 4th Light Trench Mortar Battery on 28th June, 1916 and promoted to Lance Corporal on 12th September, 1917
Bertie was Killed in Action in Hebuterne, France on 30th March, 1918 and is buried in the Euston Road Cemetery - his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial
