An Original Anzac awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
103 years ago today, on the 3rd October 1918, Sergeant Robert Beath, 2nd & 57th Battalions (Reg No’s -596 & 4962), painter and signwriter (Walsh Island Government Dockyard, Newcastle, N.S.W.), father of two (Agnes Catherine and Robert William), Died of Wounds, age 34.
Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 9th June 1884 to Robert S (died 1939) Beath of 3 Buxton Street, Adamstown, N.S.W.; husband of Eileen Grace Beath nee Kelly (married 1912, Wickham, N.S.W., died?) of 16 James Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and Mitchell Street, Stockton, N.S.W. and 126 Brougham Street, Darlinghurst, N.S.W., Robert enlisted August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion at Randwick, N.S.W.
Returned to Australia - 2.9.1915 (venereal disease, did not returned home to Hamilton).
Re-embarked-7.3.1916, Melbourne, VIC.
Admitted to hospital 24.1.1917 (myalgia & rheumatism).
Wounded in action - 29.9.1918 (SW legs and gassed, dangerously ill.)
Robert is resting at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. Block R Plot III Row M Grave 5.
Mr. Beath’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Tighes Hill Public School Honor Roll (photos, unveiled on the 24th May 1918, 133 names originally inscribed, 144 names now inscribed, 20 Fallen, Robert’s name not indicated as Fallen), Newcastle Lodge-Grand United Order of Druids Roll of Honour - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article137097616 and the Newcastle Lodge No. 423 Ancient Order of Druids Roll of Honour. Name probably inscribed on the Tighes Hill Pride of Ferndale Lodge G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour.
There is no memorial inscription on the headstone of parents Robert S and Sarah Beath, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of their son’s supreme sacrifice for God, King and Country. ANGLICAN 2-127. 7.
Served in the Boer War (Royal Marines).
