29 February 1916 - transferred to the 49th Battalion
29 October 1917 - promoted to Lance Corporal
25 April 1918 - gunshot wound to the elbow and right leg
27 May 1919 - discharged at Brisbane
Commenced return to Australia on 19 February 1919 aboard HT Orca disembarking on 6 April 1919.
Brother of William Charles Underwood who returned to Australia on 23 March 1918 having served with the 31st Battalion
