Biography contributed by Janet Holmes

Laidley Joseph Fogg was born at the family home in Palmer Street, St Leonards, North Shore on 17 August 1889. His father was Joseph Henry Fogg (1844 – 1911) and his mother was Ada Fogg (nee Field) (1860 – 1896). Laidley attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Laidley’s mother died at the age of 36 when he was seven years old. His father moved to the Metropole Hotel sometime after her death until he married Ethel Vardy in 1904 and moved to Toxteth Road, Glebe Point.

Laidley married Athena Louisa McLachlan (Thena) on 3 August 1915 at the residence of Thena’s parents, John and Mary McLachlan of Hardwood Island, Clarence River. Prior to his enlistment, Laidley and Thena’s son Garry was born in Annandale in July 1916. At the time of enlistment, the family lived at “Taunton” in Gale Street, Woolwich and Thena and Garry remained living there for the duration of Laidley’s service in WW1.  He returned from the war in August 1919 and left the army on 25 September 1919.

Laidley was a keen sailor. In 1919 not long after his return from service, Laidley skippered J S Palmer’s yacht “Aoma” to victory in the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club handicap.

In 1921, Laidley and Thena’s daughter Gwenda was born in Manly and the family had moved to Austin St, Lane Cove by 1922. Laidley worked in the city of Sydney but the details of his work are not known. He died at his house in Lane Cove in 1960. Thena outlived him by many years, dying in 1979.
