Died on this date – 7th July…… Alfred Osborne was born in Birmingham, England on 9th October, 1889.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 30th September, 1914 as a 25 year old, single, Driver / Mechanic.

He was posted to D. A. P. (Divisional Ammunition Park) as Driver on 30th September, 1914 for recruit training & later was transferred to 8th Australian Army Service Corps (no date recorded).

Driver Alfred Osbourne (name as listed on Embarkation Roll), Service number 1716, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 22nd December, 1914 with the 301st (M.T.) A.S.C. (17th Divisional Ammunition Park) (8th A.S.C.)

On 10th March, 1915 Driver Osborne was written up at Romsey for Obscene Language & Insubordination to Senior N.C.O. He was awarded 2 extra guards & 1 week confined to Barracks. He was written up again on 28th March, 1915 for being Absent without Leave. This was admonished on 29th March, 1915.

He embarked from Avonmouth, Bristol, England on S.S. Saba on 12th July, 1915 & disembarked at Rouen, France on 15th July, 1915.

Driver Alfred Osborne was promoted to Lance Corporal on 25th July, 1915 at Steenvorde.

On 17th November, 1915 Lance Corporal Osborne was written up for neglect of duty – “1. While N.C.O. in charge of camp guard did not march round reliefs 2. Not ascertaining if anything unusual had happened 3. Not reporting that Dvr Smith came into camp at 11.15 pm after sentry had reported same. He was severely reprimanded on 18th November, 1915.”
He was granted Leave from 28th November, 1915 to 5th December, 1915.
Lance Corporal Osborne was admitted to 4th Stationary Hospital at St. Omer, France on 10th January, 1916 with conjunctivitis & was discharged to B.M.T.D. (Base Motor Transport Depot) at Rouen, France on 18th January, 1916.

He was admitted to Hospital on 29th January, 1916 with Influenza & was discharged to B.M.T.D. (Base Motor Transport Depot) on 16th February, 1916.

On 8th March, 1916 Lance Corporal Osborne was admitted to Hospital 1916 with Rheumatism. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship St. Andrew on 17th March, 1916 & was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England on 18th March, 1916 with Rheumatism which was caused from Active Service in France. He was reported to be dangerously ill (no date recorded).

Lance Corporal Alfred Osborne died on 7th July, 1916 at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England from Infective Endocarditis and Pneumonia.

He was buried in Southampton Old Cemetery, Hampshire, England – Plot number 149 N. 194 (family grave for three) and now has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.
