Died on this date - 27th December.......Private Alfred Stanley Atkins was born at Newry, near Urunga, New South Wales around 1891. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 3rd January, 1916 as a 24 year old Labourer.
Private Atkins disembarked at Plymouth, England on 2nd December, 1916 & was transferred to 3rd Training Battalion at No. 3 Camp Durrington, Wiltshire on 18th December, 1916.
Private Atkins was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire – dangerously ill with Broncho-pneumonia on 23rd December, 1916. He died at 1.10 am on 27th December, 1916 of Broncho-Pneumonia & was buried in Durrington Cemetery where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
