Private William Sutherland (Service No:6643) enlisted in the AIF on 13 December 1916 and embarked from Fremantle for Devonport with 19th/28th Infantry Battalion on 29 January 1917 on board HMAT A28 Militiades. Private Sutherland served with 7th Training Battalion in France and transferred on 1 February 1919 to 2nd Division Train (a logisitc support and supply unit). He embarked from England for Fremantle on 12 July 1919 on board the City of Exeter and was Discharged on 24 September 1919. Two of William's sons - Allan and John - served in WWII.
The eldest of nine children, William was born in 1881 in Ghisborne, Macedon Ranges in Victoria to Allan Sutherland (b1855 in Creswick nr Ballarat, Victoria) and Elizabeth Alcorn (b1857 in Melbourne, Victoria). Allan (a Labourer) and Elizabeth married in 1880 in Melbourne, Victoria and lived in Ghisborne, Numurkah nr Shepparton, Banncockburn nr Geelong, and Camperdown where Allan was a Drover, Labourer and Wood Merchant.
William worked as a Timber Hewer in WA in the early 1900s and was in Manjimup in 1913 when he married Florence Towie (b1891 in Lancashire, England) - Florence had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1906, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Orontes. William and Florence settled in Manjimup where William worked as a Timber Hewer. By the early 1930s William was a Billiard Marker and Florence a Storekeeper in Manjimup. William died in 1963 and Florence in 1978.
