Biography

Son of Thomas William BABBAGE and Lettie Maud nee DEAN

Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Leslie Percival Babbage born on the 14th of October 1892 in Glenelg, South Australia. This made Babbage 22 years old around the time he enlisted in the WW1. Since he was not married at the time, his next of kin was listed as his mother Lettie Maud Babbage (Nee Dean). His father's name was Thomas William Babbage.

He was raised in a South Australian Presbyterian household in Forestville, near his birthplace of Glenelg. Before Babbage was enlisted, he worked as a clerk. At the age of 22 years and 8 months on July the 5th 1915 he officially took an oath to enlist in the 32nd Infantry Battalion of the AIF. On the 18th of November 1915, he set sail and arrived in Egypt, where he undertook further training by other British Personnel. He  then set sail and disembarked at Marseilles in the South of France 23rd June 1916, and travelled to the Western Front.
