William Jeffreys Whiteford was born on the 16th of December 1889 in Mile End, South Australia. He lived with his mother Martha Jane Whiteford in Torrensville, South Australia.
Later in his life he attended the School of Mines and started his job as a draughtsman. He worked for a while and then on the 2nd of July 1915 one year after the war had begun he enlisted at Keswick, South Australia at the age of 26.
He was a part of the 21st Army Service Corps who went to Egypt and fought on the Western Front. They embarked on the 23rd November 1915, from the Port Melbourne on the Melbourne HMAT Ceramic. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant & Staff Sergeant.
