Stan Smith was on his way to Gallipoli 30 August 1915 when it was torpedoed and sunk. He was rescued and sent to France during 1916 when he fell ill with pleurisy 23 June 1916. He died of septiceamia six days later. His brother older brother Private A.L. Smith no. 19, stretcher bearer AMC 1st Field Ambulance, was killed in action at Pozieres 8 weeks later, 17 August 1916.
