Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
76 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 12th April 1947, Lance Corporal Thomas James Rose, Australian Army Medical Corps Details (Reg No-2376), labourer from Little Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 73. ANGLICAN 1-51. 30.
Thomas died at Balmain, N.S.W. on the 10th April 1947.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 15th September 1875 to Thomas James Snr and Elizabeth Rose; husband of Catherine (Katherine) Elizabeth Rose nee Moore (married 1898, Stockton, N.S.W., died 27.4.1940, Rockdale, N.S.W. - sleeping here), Thomas enlisted on the 17th April 1916 with the 36th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance 19.7.1917 (debility not stated).
Wounded in action - 12.10.1917 (GSW left arm & right hip & thigh, 1st Battle of Passchendaele).
Invalided to England 21.10.1917.
Thomas was invalided home on the 10th February 1919, not being discharged until the 13th January 1920.
Mr. Rose’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour.
Service record states Died after Discharge, 10/4/1947.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, 10.8.1948.
I have placed poppies at this WW1 Digger’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
