John was the son of John Sutton and Fanny Johnson, a Redcliffe pioneer family. Young John attended the Humpybong State School and later married May Beesley in 1910. At the age of 42 he enlisted in August 1915 and was sent to Rabaul, New Guinea, with the 4th Tropical Force.
