Died on this date - 6th May.......Private Victor Roy Baker was born at Palmer’s Island near Clarence River, New South Wales. His birth was registered in the district of Maclean, NSW in 1889. Victor enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 7th October, 1915 as a 26 year old Labourer from Yamba, NSW.
Private Baker embarked from Sydney, NSW on 30th December, 1915 & disembarked at Egypt. He was admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance with Mumps on 3rd March, 1916. He recovered & was sent to France on 28th March, 1916.
Private Baker was sent to Field Ambulance on 19th April, 1916 with Influenza. He was admitted to Lahore General Hospital on 23rd April, 1916 with nephritis. Private Baker was invalided to England with acute Nephritis & Bronchitis on 11th May, 1916. He was admitted to Hospital on 24th July, 1916 with nephritis.
Private Victor Roy Baker was admitted sick to Fargo Military Hospital on 2nd May, 1917. He died on 6th May, 1917 of Gunshot wounds to right chest (Self Inflicted).
A Coroner’s Court was held at Fargo on 8th May, 1917 & the Jury’s Verdict was “Victor Roy Baker died on 6th day of May, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital from the effects of a self-inflicted revolver-shot wound and so do further say that the said Victor Roy Baker not being of sound mind did kill himself.”
Private Victor Roy Baker was buried on 10th May, 1917 at Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire. There are 140 other WW1 Soldiers buried in Durrrington Cemetery.
