Alfred was a New Zealander who only been in Australia for a couple of years when he enlisted. He had been born and raised at Hikutaia NZ. Alfred William Alley was awarded the Military Medal at Bullecourt, “For gallant conduct during enemy attack on Noreuil on the morning of the 15 April 1917. Bombardier Alley went out and unaided carried in a wounded man a distance of about 200 yards across No Man's Land under enemy machinegun and artillery fire. Later when volunteers were called for to go out as stretcher bearers and bring in the wounded this N.C.O. was the first to volunteer and organised his gun detachment into bearer parties. He set a fine example to the men in his detachment.”
His younger brother, 12/2932 Private David Clifford Alley 1st Battalion Auckland Regiment, was killed in action in France 26 September 1916, age 21.
