Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Richard was the third of eight children of William Arthur Maller (b1869 in Wallumbilla, QLD) and Martha Gardner (b1869 in Ipswich, QLD). Arthur (a Farmer) and Martha married in 1891 in Ipswich, QLD where they lived until moving to Woogaroo Creek in Redcliffe, QLD in 1901. By 1908 the family had moved to Pickanjinnie near Roma where William was a Farmer.

Richard was a Farmer in Wallumbilla when he enlisted in the AIF with older brother Arthur Glenas (Private; Service No:7019). Like his older brother, Richard had served three years with 3rd Light Horse Regiment and they enlisted on the same day in September 1916, and embarked per HMAT 55 Kyarra. Richard served with the 9th and 49th Infantry Battalions in France, where he was WiA on two occasions - GSWs in 1917 and 1918. Richard was RTA in September 1918 suffering 'loss of use of left leg' (National Archives Australia) as a result of his wounds in 1918. He was Discharged in December 1918.

Returning to Wallumbilla, Richard was a Farmer when he married Elizabeth (Bess) Cormack (b1905 in Scotland) in 1925. Bess had arrived in QLD with her parents and siblings on board the Orontes in 1912.

Richard and Bess settled at Muggleton near Roma, QLD and raised their family - Richard was a Selector before acquiring Hamilton Park in Warrumbilla, where he was a Grazier. Richard died in 1980 and Bess in 1994.
