Donald and his brother Reginald both enlisted on January 18th, 1916, and were both assigned to the 9th Machine Gun Company of the 3rd Battalion.
They joined their unit in France in November 1916.
On June 1st, 1917, while their unit was actively engaged with the enemy near the village of Ploegsteert Donald was injured in an explosion in an ammunition dump.
He suffered from significant bruising to his left shoulder and back and a concussion. he was pinned under debris for some time and experienced paralysis in his legs for 2 days.
He was eventually evacuated to England and continued to have respiratory issues and was evacuated from England on December 25th, 1918 as he had ongoing laryngitis.
He arrived in Sydney on February 11th, 1919, six months after his brother. He lived in Sydney and enlisted in the CMF in World War 2 and died in 1947.
