Charles Dudley Smallacombe was born on 11/03/1894 in a small town called Wirrabara just mid-north of SA. Charles lived on 40 High Street, just behind the Wirrabara Producers Market. Smallacombe was 22 and ½ years old at the time of his enlistment and worked as a Clerk in Wirrabara before being enlisted on September the 11th 1916. Charles Dudley’s Mother, Alice Smallacombe was born in the City of Adelaide living at 115 Carrington Street while Smallacombe’s father has no mention. He was 170.688 cm and weighed 57 kg and his chest reached 81.28-88.9 cm and his hair was brown, his eyes were blue his complexion was white, and his religion was the Church of England.
Smallacombe enlisted in the Army on September 11th, 1916, in Adelaide, SA, and signed an oath to be ‘taken by person being enlisted’. Charles Smallacombe was allocated to ‘Unit 6,9.M.G.COY’ on the 22nd of October 1916.
Smallacombe served as a Private during World War 1 with a service number 470A, his role title was 9 Machine Gun Company - 1 to 6 Reinforcements on May-December 1916 (also the 4th Machine Gun Battalion).
Smallacombe embarked at Melbourne 22-12-16 and disembarked Devonport 3-3-17. During the war, Smallacombe's Mother Received a letter from one 'J.M Lean' a major in charge of 'Base Records' informing her that her son had been wounded due to the effects of gas on the 23rd of February 1918.
Charles had committed an offense, that offense being leaving with-out approval or 'AWOL' (absent without official leave) on November the 2nd of November 1916. Charles Smallacombe proceeded to be AWOL this time 9 days later, on 11/12/1916.
