John Casey was the son of David Sarsfield and Hanora (nee Carty) Casey of Bute.
John was born at Bute on 3 June 1894. A farmer, he was 23 years old when he enlisted in Adelaide on 26 February 1918.
John was appointed to 2nd Reinforcements “S” UK and entrained to Sydney where he embarked aboard HMAT “Orontes” on 5 June 1918. He disembarked at Liverpool on 14 August. John was encamped at Fovant with 9th Training Battalion when the war ended on 11 November 1918. Eleven days later John proceeded overseas to France where he was taken on strength of 43 Battalion. In February 1919 John was attached to the Division Football Tour to play a series of games. He returned to England on 19 May and embarked for Australia on 3 July. John disembarked from “Prinz Huburtus” on 22 August and was discharged on 6 September 1919.
