Edwin was the third of seven children of Henry (Harry) David Austin (born 1856 in York, WA) and Amelia Ann Nelson (born 1867 in York, WA). All three sons served in WWI - older brother Henry Ernest served with 11th Battalion 3rd Brigade as a Corporal (Service No: 1101) and was KIA in France in 1918. Younger brother Leslie Douglas served with 10th Light Horse Regiment as a Trooper (Service No: 3772)

Edwin was a Farm Labourer in Beverley WA when he enlisted in York WA in the AIF in February 1915. He served with the 10th and 3rd Light Horse at Gallipoli Penisula and in Egypt and was Discharged in Decemebr 1919.

Edwin returned to WA, and in 1920 married Emma Harcourt Gard (born 1895 in Victoria). They settled in Narrogin, WA where Edwin joined the WA Governemt Railways, initially as a Labourer and through the years as a Fitter's Assistant, Fireman and Fitter. Edwin died in 1945 and Emma in 1967
