Son of late John BANYES and Emily IVEY fmly BAYNES nee BENNETT
Enlisted as an original member of the 10th Battalion AIF on 24 August 1914 and embarked aboard HMAT Ascanius as a sergeant on 20 October 1914 was wounded at Gallipoli in May 1915 but returned to duty. Transferred to 50th Battalion and was wounded twice in France. Returned to Australia as a Captain, 23 January 1918 medically unfit.
His brother 479 Company Quartermaster Sergeant Ambrose Harry Baynes aslof of the 50th Battalion returned to Australia, 8 October 1918.
