Roy Barratt was born on the 23rd of April 1891, in Orroroo, South Australia. He lived with his parents, Eliza Jane Hill Barratt born in 1856 and William Robert Barratt born 1855 they had three more children. Roy's siblings, Hurtle George Barratt born in 1884, William Robert Barratt born in 1887 and Milton Bruce Barratt born in 1902. At enlistment, Roy was 5 feet and 10 inches, weighed 150 lbs, and had hazel eyes and brown hair. He was 22 years of age.
Roy followed Methodism and worked as a minister before the war, and before he was enlisted on the 7th of January 1916. He was enlisted as a Private, and on the 25th of January he was assigned to the 2nd Depot Battalion for training. However on the 16th of February, he was moved to the Australian Medical Corp Base, where he stayed until the 29th of February when he was reassigned to the 11th Field Ambulance on the 1st of March 1916. He embarked with his unit on the 31st of May 1916, on board HMAT Berrima, his service, The Western Front.
On the 23rd of August 1916 Roy landed and disembarked with his unit, the 11th Field Ambulance at Plymouth. They stayed there at Salisbury Plain (Lark Hill Camp) for training till the 24th of November 1916. The unit Embarked Overseas for France, landing at Le Harve on the 26th, Entraining for a three-day journey up to the border of Belgium. Detrained on the 29th at Bailleul, the Unit then marched for two days taking over a divisional rest station in Steenwerck. From here they Supported the 3rd Division, ran sector medical posts, and operated the Advanced Dressing Stations, and rest areas.
On the 19th of March 1917, Roy was admitted to an unknown Hospital for Measles, where he stayed until he was Discharged to Duty on the 3rd of April. He re-joined his Unit, which continued to Support battalions on the border of Belgium. On the 28th August 1917, he was again treated for illness and was transferred, to 4th Stationary Hospital. After treatment he was Discharged to Duty on the 1st of September, re-joining the 11th Field Ambulance on the 8 September 1917.
Roy returned to South Australia on the 28th of February 1919 and disembarked 10th April 1919.
Roy was discharged on the 21st of May 1919. He was awarded two medals for his service, the British War Medal, received on the 27th of August 1921, and the Victory Medal, received on the 17th of September 1922, all for his brave service to Australia.
Roy died on the 25th of October 1967.
