Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Leo was the seventh of ten children of William John Hardy (born 1851 in London, England) and Sarah Jane Rudge (born 1855 in London, England). William - an Engraver and Artist - married Sarah - a Nursery Governess - in 1877 in London, where they lived and worked until immigrating to Fremantle in Western Australia in 1893.

Leo was six years of age when he arrived in Fremantle with his family. He was working as a Clerk in 1915 when he married Florance Margaret Buckley (born 1892 at Newcastle near Toodyay in Western Australia). Leo enlisted with the AIF in 1917 as a Private (Service No:4030) with 51st Infantry Battalion before transferring to Army Pay Corps in 1919. He was Discharged in April 1920 (Sergeant). Brothers - Philip (Service No:4344) and Basil (Service No:2669) - and Brother-in-Law Herbert Rigg (Service No:15977) served in WWI, and eldest son Joseph (Service Nos:WX27095/W80330) served in WWII.

Following his Discharge, Leo and Florance settled in Perth - living at Subiaco and Maylands where Leo was a Clerk for the WA Government Railways. Florance died in 1942 and Leo in 1947.
