Son of Alfred Charles Burgess & Ada Hosken and was born on the 22nd of July 1890 in Cygnet River, Kangaroo Island SA.
His parents were married on the 28th of July 1884 Tahlia Station SA.
His mother was the daughter of William HOSKEN & Elizabeth BROADBENT and was born 17th August 1862 Blackforest SA.
His father was born in 1858 in Sandridge VIC.
In 1894 his father; Alfred, laid the foundation of the family farm at White Lagoon, KI. They named the property “Adavale”.
It was surrounded by mallee scrub about 18 miles from Kingscote.
In 1909 the farm consisted of 2000 acres and they had planted Federation wheat, oats and barley. It carried 1000 sheep and distilled and exported Eucalyptus oil in large quantities to London.
His father sold the property in April 1911.
On the 1st of May 1911 the family left KI for their new home in Magill SA. They named their new home “Ingomar”
Edward married Ethel May COLLETT on the 30th of October 1913 in the Methodist Church, Payneham SA. Ethel was the daughter of Edward COLLETT & Elizabeth Ann COLLETT and was born on the 1st of October 1893 in Mt Remarkable.
On the 28th of January 1914, Edward & Ethel were arrested in Albert Road, South Melbourne, by the Melbourne Criminal Investigation Police for larceny. They had stolen property belonging to Annie MURRAY of Clauscen Street, North Fitzroy.
Annie had let her furnished house at Bishop Street, Brunswick to Edward & Ethel. When they vacated the premises, they stole furnishings. At the time, Edward was a canvasser. They had been renting the property since the 22nd of November 1913.
They were remanded for 7 days in the Melbourne City Court.
Ethel was fined £3 and 8/-, she claimed she had washed the furnishings and must have removed them by mistake, along with her goods.
Edward was discharged as he claimed her was not aware of the removal of the furnishings.
Their daughter, Gwendoline Phillis was born circa 1914.
They moved back to South Australia by early 1916 and were living at Franklin St Parkside.
Edward enlisted into the 43rd Battalion, C Company on the 20th of January 1916 in Adelaide, SA and was allotted the service number; 1160.
He listed his wife; Ethel May BURGESS, of Semaphore Road, Semaphore, as next of kin.
On the 9th June 1916 he embarked for Sues. He returned to Australia on the 19th August 1916 on the “Seang Choon”. Edward was discharged, medically unfit, from the AIF, due to Hemorrhoids, on the 23rd of September 1916. Edward was awarded the British War Medal.
They moved to Ship Street, Adelaide on Edward’s return and in 1917 they were living at Franklin Street, Parkside, SA.
By 1923 they had moved to 16 Port Road, Brompton.
In 1939 they lived at 18 Watson Avenue, Rose Park and Edward was a dealer.
By 1941 they had moved to 96 Rose Terrace, Wayville. Their daughter and son in-law also lived with them.
In 1955 they again left South Australia to live at 22 Davies Street Moonee Ponds VIC.
They had moved to 14 Francis Street, Ascot Vale by 1963 and Edward was a pensioner. They were living with their daughter and son in-law.
Edward died on the 8th of June 1973 in Adelaide, SA and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery; Plan 3, Row 19, Site number 107
Ethel died on the 5th of May 1988 in Adelaide, SA and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery; Plan 3, Row 19, Site number 107, with her husband, Edward.
