William Bray is Robert Lalor

William Bray 2458 was actually Robert Alexander Lalor Born 15/5/1896 in Enfield Sydney. He initially enlisted underage and was caught out by his mother. Robert then became William Bray and enlisted on the 8/9/1914 becoming a Driver. Later in life Robert Lalor needed to confirm his true identity and a bid to do so left a trail of documents now with the National Archive of Australia. One such letter dated 3/4/1967 relates to Robert's application for the ANZAC medallions to badge.
Dear Sir, My application for the ANZAC medallions and badge, as set out here under. Date of attestation 8/9/14. 1st Brigade Artillery left Australia 18th October 1914 in the 1st AIF Division to arrive in Egypt 7th December 1914. After training at Mena Camps left Egypt in April 1915. Arrived Gallipoli Peninsula on the morning of 25th April 1915. Evacuated in May 1915 to No.1 General Hospital Alexanders Egypt the evacuated to England by Hospital Ship Asturias, Returned from England to Tel.el Kelbies in Egypt then over to France. Throughout the war was wounded evacuated Villiers Bretnaux, gas and wounded to Calais Hospital on the coast of France, thence over to England into Duntroon War Hospital. Sometime then back to camp then soon the war was over. And then it was home to dear old Aussie on troop ship Berrima. Arrived in Dear old Sydney March 1919. Received my discharge on the 27th April 1919. Certificate of Discharge 84794 and Serviceman's bBadge 87971. Please kindly note here under my parents seing that I had enlisted in the Engineers had me withdrawn owing to my being under age. Then on the 10th September 1914 I changed my name to William Bray and enlisted in the 1st Brigade Artillery. Throughout the war I was No. 2458 Driver W Bray and discharged in this name now on being granted a pension entitlement on my giving the ????? a clear explanation of what I did then excepted by repatriation. Now all my repatriations records are under my lawful name thus Robert Alexander Lalor.
