John Frame was born 11 November 1884. When the First World War began he was a married man, living in North Adelaide and employed as a commercial traveller. He enlisted in the AIF on 26 July 1915 and embarked from Australia on the HMAT Benalla on 27 October. He arrived in Egypt in early 1916 meaning he missed the fighting on Gallipoli. He served in the 13th Field Ambulance was often detached to duty with infantry battalions.
On 28 March 1917 Frame was badly wounded in the forehead and spent nearly two months in hospital. He returned to duty on 25 May. In September 1918, after more than two years helping wounded men in some of the worst fighting on the Western Front, Frame was returned to Australia suffering with chronic asthma. Nothing is known of his postwar life.
