Albert was the sixth of ten children of John Alexander Black (born 1850 in Armagh, Ireland) and Lucinda Lavinia Myles (born 1853 in County Tyrone in Ireland) John and Lucinda married in 1873 in Pimpama, QLD where John worked as a Labourer. The family moved to Brisbane, QLD in 1885.

Albert was a School Teacher originally in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, QLD and then in Pentland near Charter's Towers before he enlisted in Brisbane, QLD in 1916 in the AIF. Albert was a Private (Service No: 627) with 11th Machine Gun Coy, and with the 41st and 42nd Infantry Battalions, He was WIA in Rouen in France in 1918, receiving a GSW to the left thigh, and was Discharged in 1919.

Albert returned to Brisbane, QLD where he resumed work as a Teacher until 1922 when he moved to Nambour, QLD and was a Farmer until 1940. Albert then returned to Brisbane and worked as a Mail Officer until he retired in 1952. He lived in Brisbane until his death in 1966
