Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
75 years ago today, on the Saturday morning of the 13th December 1947, Private Oswald Leslie Bailey, 24th Battalion (Reg No-4041), ship’s fireman from 47 Bryant Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales and Mayfield-Maryville, N.S.W., father of one (Marjorie), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. ANGLICAN 2-133. 41.
Born at Ballina, New South Wales on the 17th May 1889 to Francis and Alice Bailey; husband of Mabel Annie Bailey nee? (married in England?, died?), Oswald enlisted November 1915 at Melbourne, Victoria.
Admitted to hospital 19.11.1916 (myalgia).
Oswald returned home on the 3rd January 1918, being discharged medically unfit (tachycardia) on the 14th February 1918.
Presentated with an Australian gold medal by the Tighes Hill Soldiers' Send-off and Welcome Home Committee at the Rosedale Hall.
Mr. Bailey’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1).
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Oswald’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge, 12.12.1947.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
